Things to See and Do!

The Mountain Harvest Festival is held every September in Paonia. Join this community as they celebrate the harvest and the fruits of their labors! This wonderful mountain festival is steeped in tradition and stirred with innovative fun.

Mountain Harvest Festival Studio Tour The North Fork is blessed with a multitude of wonderful visual artists. You will be able to experience the atmosphere in which these folks create their art. The studio tour includes a felt maker/fiber artist, metal workers, painters in water color, mixed media and pastel, an original clothing maker, a gallery in Hotchkiss that also includes the owner's studio and the Lands End Sculpture Center, our nationally famous foundry. There is no charge for the studio tour, and the artists will have work available for sale on site. This tour also provides a good way to see the scenic area around Paonia!

A good sampling of the area's finest artists will show their works in the gallery in the "new" old bank building at the Blue Sage Center during the entire 3-day Mountain Harvest Festival. The show includes a wide range of work including fabric, watercolor/pastel/oil paintings, pottery, sculpture, photography, and glass. Several of these artists are award winners. (Back to Top)

Cedaredge Applefest

The Cedaredge Applefest is another great festival, held annually in Cedaredge which celebrates the harvest of the Apples. This is a great opportunity to taste the fresh sweetness of many varieties of apples, but to also share the charming spirit of this small mountain community. Each year several thousand visitors come to enjoy two fun-packed days of music, food, and exhibits of over 200 Vendors. This community event features great entertainment in the Park Pavilion, as well as over 100 vendor booths on the streets along the park. A great event for the whole family! Olathe Sweet Corn Festival

In 1992, a few insightful people in the small western Colorado town of Olathe, decided to celebrate the community's agricultural jewel ... "Olathe Sweet" sweet corn by organizing the first Olathe Sweet Corn Festival. Sweet corn is the crop that kept this rural American community alive when other efforts were failing. Indeed, the citizens of the Town of Olathe, Colorado cause for celebration.

The Olathe Sweet Corn Festival has been about people from its earliest beginnings. Sweet corn provided a way of bringing people together and providing them with a sense of community and accomplishment. Operating under the premise of "giving the people what they want," the festival staff set out to become a catalyst for improving the social, economic and cultural environment of the Town of Olathe. Beginning in 1992, area non-profits were encouraged to take on various event jobs and vendor responsibilities to increase their fund raising capabilities.

A variety of entertainment throughout the day, with such legendary entertainers as Three Dog Night, Credence Clearwater Revisted, LONESTAR, Bonnie Nelson and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The Agricultural Center features fun and educational information about agriculture in the Uncompahgre Valley. Free contests and games for all ages are available throughout the day and over 150 vendors featuring food, crafts, novelty items, commercial and carnival games offer something for everyone. North Fork Bluegrass Festival

The North Fork Bluegrass Festival is held at the Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss. This annual event has been referred to as the "Sundance of Bluegrass". Many talented favorites take the stage along with newly discovered groups. Recent performers have been Sweet Sunny South, The Wilders, Badly Bent and Coal Creek Bluegrass Band. This event is held annually in early June, at the beautiful and shady Delta County Fairgrounds. This venue offers the sweet flavor of the small town of Hotchkiss, at the foot of the beautiful West Elk Mountains, along the rambling North Fork of the Gunnison River. (Back to Top)

Crawford Pioneer Days

Crawford Pioneer Days is held the same weekend as the North Fork Bluegrass Festival. Travel back and forth between these unique events! Pioneer Days is an annual celebration of Crawford's heritage. Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountain's West Elk Range, Crawford is surrounded by extraordinary views created by majestic mountains and unique geological structures. Crawford has a small town atmosphere with the serenity that only a small town can offer. The weekend festivities include a parade, melodrama, arts and crafts booths, barbeques and a fantastic fireworks finale at Crawford State Park. (Back to Top)

Deltarado Days

Deltarado Days takes place in Delta, in late June. This is a celebration re-connecting with the history of Delta County. An exciting parade kicks off the weekend. In addition to the parade, other traditional elements will include the events and celebration at Cleland Park including the old time fiddle contest, kids' carnival, food vendors, live music, horseshoes and even a coal shoveling contest with prize money. The mud volleyball tournament has become a favored part of the weekend. Deltarado Days has been an annual event in Delta since 1936. It was first produced as a harvest celebration, and has always provided an opportunity for the people of our area to come together to celebrate their rich agricultural and ranching heritage. Little Britches Rodeo

The Cedaredge Little Britches Rodeo takes place for 3 days every year during July. There are usually more than 100 contestants from Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Idaho and other states. All of the girls and boys who compete are between the ages of 8 and 18. They compete in 2 age groups - Juniors 8 through 13 and Seniors 14 through 18. There is also a "Mutton Busting" contest for kids under 8 years old. The Cedaredge Little Britches Rodeo is the oldest continuing Little Britches Rodeo in the United States. (Back to Top)

Cherry Days in Paonia

The Fourth of July Paonia Cherry Days has been celebrated for over 50 years. If you are looking for a small town old-fashioned holiday, book early at one of the Bed & Breakfasts or at one of the town's motels. Cherry Days hosts the largest parade in the county, year after year! This is true Americana, happening right here, right now! Imagine kids riding their bikes with red, white & blue streamers in the spokes, a Clown Kazoo Band, vintage cars, Dancing, Singing, Class Reunion Floats, Unicycles, etc. etc. This parade has it all! The parade ends up in Paonia Town Park, with its huge shade trees, vendors, day long entertainment, family oriented carnival and food booths. You may even be able to pick up a local softball game! Entertainment abounds at town park, and throughout the rest of the town for the entire weekend. (Back to Top)

Earth Day

Earth Day in Paonia is celebrated every spring with a day-long festival in beautiful Paonia Town Park. Music, poetry, dancing, food, May Pole for the kids, arts & crafts booths, vendors showing sustainable applications, and the fossil fuel-free parade highlight this annual event, sponsored by the Western Slope Environmental Resource Council (WSERC). Devil's Thumb Golf Course

The Devil's Thumb Golf Course is an oasis in the Western Colorado high desert. Located only a few miles from the main intersection of town, this 18-hole course offers a variety of challenges for any player. Views of three different mountain ranges and a glimpse of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, this course is tucked on the rolling hillside beneath the Grand Mesa. The golf course was designed with strategic thinking as the highest priority for the golfer. There are multiple options for shot execution on every hole; some are obvious, while others are quite subtle. The wind will certainly play a large role in the shot selection of most golfers on this wide-open layout. The ability to execute a wide range of shot types, from a low running shot, to a high, soft spinner will be what separates the best golfers from the rest of the field on this track. (Back to Top)

Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials

Hotchkiss goes to the dogs in May! The Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials test the abilities of canine and handler. It is a pure delight to watch as "man's best friend" gathers and herds their wooly friends. Camp wagon contests and great food are all a part of the day. Scenic Byways

Three scenic byways draw people in from around the country. One, the Dinosaur Diamond a newly designated National Byway, features the paleontology of the area. Dinosaur bones, early man's inhabitance, and geological time lines are all part of the Diamond's experience. The West Elk Loop is a recreational, historical and conservationist display of communities working together to be sustainable and entertaining. The Grand Mesa National Scenic and Historic Byway features over 300 lakes, easy access camping, including ADA fishing and boating docks, history that includes an English Baron, Chipeta and Ouray, ranching and the nation's first Forest Ranger. Black Canyon National Park

The Black Canyon Nation Park brings its beauty into the Crawford area. The North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, left in the primitive state, has fewer crowds, spectacular views and unprecedented heights. The sheerness and depths of this canyon once inspired President Theodore Roosevelt to consider this one of the state's most unusual features. People travel in from around the world to climb the walls of the Black Canyon. For those who do not wish to scale the walls, there are trails for all ability levels. (Back to Top)

Dominguez and Escalante Canyons

These canyons, once home to archaic tribes, then outlaws and now, boaters and fishermen, are hidden jewels in this diverse area. One must drive off of the beaten path to discover the canyon walls, rocky mountain sheep, primitive tribal rock art and rivers that make up these recreational treasures. Some areas are best found by rafting the Gunnison River through the canyons. Brimming with history, these canyons are still a favorite hide away for human kind to seek out. (Back to Top)

Council Tree Pow Wow

From the first drum beat until the last footfall, the thrill of Council Tree Pow Wow and Native American Cultural Festival will capture your heart and possibly your soul. Each year in the fall, thousands of people gather for the inspiration that is Council Tree Pow Wow. This Native American cultural arts festival is part of an ancient tradition. Since time unknown, the Ute Indian tribes have met here for their annual council meetings. This festival is not a re-enactment of those meetings, this festival is the continuation of those council meetings. Tribal branches will meet for dance, drumming and other contests and exhibitions. Colorado National Monument

The Colorado National Monument is 23,000 acres of awe-inspiring scenery sets the backdrop for your visit to Grand Junction, Colorado! Colorado hiking is legendary in the sandstone rock formations, arches, and canyons that date back over l.5 billion years. Drive along the serpentine 23-mile Rim Rock Road. Colorado camping is spectacular here, with sites available on a first come first served basis through the Colorado National Monument Visitor's Center. The Arts

Music is the soul of a community and here the soul is rich. Musicians here study and perform not only traditional forms of music, but enjoy presenting sounds from around the world and throughout time. Celtic flute, African drumming, classical, rock and bluegrass are but a few of the sounds to be heard on the hillsides of these communities. Residents here play anything from handbells to harp or appreciate and support the beautiful music that is the soul of our side of the divide.

Many festivals in the area are centered around visual art, and a fast growing favorite is the Render The Rock Art Competition and Auction near Crawford. Amateur and professional create side by side in the fields surrounding The Rock, Needle Rock. A multitude of media are used. It's fun for the whole family or a gathering of friends.

The City of Murals, Delta, features numerous murals and sculptures on Main Street and in parks. Featuring art from local artists such as Tracy Munson, Ginny Allen, Connie Williams and Dick Doherty the residents of Delta appreciate art and have made it a community project to support art in public places.

Cedaredge Jamboree is an on-going musical jam session going on throughout the summer. Local talent joins together for some real toe-tapping fun for the audience and play for the musicians. Cedaredge is also home to Starr's Guitars. If you love guitars, you will love Starr's. The galleries in Cedaredge offer works from around the region and around the world.
