Hotchkiss, Colorado

Hotchkiss sits in a pastoral valley brimming with bountiful orchards, antique shops and sweeping vistas. Hotchkiss also hosts the Delta County Fair. Stop in for a bite to eat, a sweet treat, or just "chew the fat" with one of the locals. An old country community filled with history, local lore and friendly folks. This town, set in breathtaking scenery will inspire you, remind you of days past and invite you to return for more.

Hotchkiss, with a population just shy of 1,000, offers a choice of several restaurants with everything from Southwestern fare to Greek.

Hotchkiss is also a hot spot for artists of all venues. The Creamery Arts Center offers community space for education and the arts in the newly renovated historic Creamery in downtown Hotchkiss. Classes in varied venues are offered continually throughout the year. (Also See Things to Do & See)

The major portion of the town itself sits nestled along the North Fork of the Gunnison River at the crossroads where Highway 92 splits off to Crawford, Black Mesa and The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the south. To the south east the West Elk Mountains rise, with the twin peaks of Mount Lamborn and Landsend Peak forming a scenic backdrop to the town.

The Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials in May will test the abilities of canine and handler. It is a pure delight to watch as "man's best friend" gathers and herds their wooly friends. The same day will feature the Kowboy Karnival where cowboys will test their skills.

The North Fork Bluegrass Festival is held at the Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss. This Colorado Western Slope Bluegrass Festival features traditional and contemporary bluegrass, instrument and vocal workshops, jams, vendors and luthiers from the region, and high-quality foot-stompin good bluegrass music. Rough RV camping and shaded tent camping is available in Delta County Fairgrounds where the bluegrass festival is held.

The Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is a great place for kids to enjoy the fish. The hatchery consists of a hatchery building with a small visitor center and tank room, residences, 32 outdoor concrete raceways, 24 nursery tanks, and 6 earthen ponds. This fish hatchery is a major supplier of trout for Colorado and New Mexico reservoirs. Here you can tour the facility and learn about hatching and transporting trout. Fishing and hiking make up the most popular pursuits in the area.
