Delta, ColoradoDelta, the city of murals, is strategically located at the confluence of two rivers, the Uncompahgre and the Gunnison Rivers. Originally set up as a trading post for Utes and whites, this community has been through interesting times and has seen interesting people. Today Delta is a surprising jewel in the high desert. Delta is set in the valley of the region, surrounded by mountain ranges, canyons and rivers. One has to struggle to stay inside as the weather here coupled with the outdoor attractions draws one to come out and play. Affordable lodging properties and attractions both in and around Delta, make this an ideal get-away.
Many buildings in Delta are on the local historic register and state register. The residents of Delta work hard to preserve their past, much to the enjoyment of visitors. An oasis in this desert is the Devil's Thumb Golf Club. Located only a few miles from the main intersection of town, this 18-hole course offers a variety of challenges for any player. With views of three different mountain ranges and a glimpse of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, this course is tucked on the rolling hillside at the foot of Grand Mesa. The golf course was designed with strategic thinking as the highest priority for the golfer. There are multiple options for shot execution on every hole; some are obvious, while others are quite subtle. The wind will certainly play a large role in the shot selection of most golfers on this wide-open layout. The ability to execute a wide range of shot types, from a low running shot, to a high, soft spinner will be what separates the best golfers from the rest of the field on this track. Visit Sweitzer Lake, near Delta, for relaxed boating and water skiing as well as excellent waterfowl watching and hunting.
